About Us

In 2003 Tor Teen was launched as an imprint dedicated to publishing quality science fiction, fantasy, and general fiction for young adults. Since then we have published fiction by bestselling and critically acclaimed authors such as Cory Doctorow, Brandon Sanderson, Kendare Blake, David Lubar, Veronica Rossi, Susan Dennard, and Kristen Simmons.

We have consistently garnered starred reviews from major trade media, year-afteryear we have been selected by educators for numerous reading lists and “best of” lists nationwide, and many of our titles have hit the New York Times bestseller list.

With nine acquiring editors working to grow our list, we look forward to introducing new voices to the ever-growing and voracious young adult audiences.

PUBLISHER • TOR CHILDREN’S AND YOUNG ADULT DIVISION

With more than thirty years in the industry, I have had tremendous opportunities to experience book publishing from its many angles. I started with Tor Books in 1985, immediately working with our customers—from school jobbers to retailers to special markets. I learned what they needed, what was working, and where there were holes that we could fill. This was the beginning of the children’s publishing, special sales, and educational marketing departments.

SENIOR ACQUIRING EDITOR

In January 2004, I got my dream job as acquiring editor for the Starscape middle-grade and Tor Teen YA imprints. I have eclectic tastes, and am open to be queried about everything, not only science fiction and fantasy. Genre is less important than the story and characters. I love books with flawed characters and suspenseful storytelling. For chapter books I am looking for high concepts; for middle-grade, action and adventure; and in YA, stories that are thought-provoking and emotionally truthful. Authors I’ve worked with include Alan Gratz, David Lubar, Kate McMullan, Sarah Porter, Brandon Sanderson, Bill Willingham, and Laurence Yep.

I joined Tor in 2007 and acquire YA fiction for Tor Teen as well as adult genre fiction for Tor. I love character-driven fantasy of all kinds, with a particular fondness for witches, knights, tasks/trials, and magic. I am drawn to evocative settings, such as colonial America, 1700s Paris, spooky present-day New Orleans, or completely new, created worlds. Also on my wish list are mysteries, thrillers, and horror for teens. A romantic element is a huge plus no matter the genre. My current list includes a variety of award-winning and bestselling authors, including Veronica Rossi, Kendare Blake, Carrie Jones, Tina Connolly, Kristen Simmons, Gregg Hurwitz, and others

After graduating with a degree in English and Entrepreneurship, I completed a Masters in publishing at NYU. I worked at Borders (RIP), interned at an agency, and then my dream job appeared—a position in editorial at Tor. Years later, I’m still thrilled to be working at a house that publishes so many of my favorite authors. From SF to fantasy to historical novels and romance, I love and acquire a variety of fiction genres, adult and YA. My list includes such authors as Susan Dennard, Cora Carmack, Stacey Kade, Steven Erikson, Eric Van Lustbader, Dan Wells, and more. I feel privileged to work with such a talented and lovely group of people.

In 2012 I joined Tor and began building my list. A. J. Hartley’s Steeplejack (June 2016) is my first YA acquisition for Tor Teen. Top on my acquisition priority list are multicultural narratives with authentic characters that portray experiences across race, gender, culture, and class; I’m especially interested in supporting marginalized authors. Having lived in Moscow, I also have a soft spot for Russian culture.

I made my first YA acquisition—#Prettyboy Must Die by Kimberly Reid—in early 2016. It’s a smart, funny thriller with a high concept hook and epic bromance. I’m actively building my list, and am on the lookout for contemporaries in that vein: commercial, hilarious, with heartwarming friendship or romance. I’d also love to find rich, immersive historical fiction, and have a particular love for American history, ancient philosophy, and fairy-tale origin stories.

I acquire for both Tor Teen and Forge Books. In YA, I’m seeking fresh, mature voices in mystery, history, and romance. I love everything from a sophisticated, psychological suspense with complex characters I can never quite trust, to a twisted, Gothic historical thriller, to 2017's Love Songs & Other Lies, a remarkable debut romance about first loves and second chances. I’m always partial to books with an international flair, or stories that show a hidden culture. If you have any combination of a feminist flapper, 1940s-era Paris, a creepy, small-town mystery, a fast-paced, Indiana Jones adventure, or a snappy, bad-boy romance, I’m hooked!

In 2016, I began acquiring and editing YA and middle-grade fiction. I’m especially interested in epic fantasy, supernatural horror, psychological thrillers, and stories that combine clever comedy and the paranormal. I’m looking for provocative, atmospheric, and emotionally-authentic stories with a supernatural element. I’m a fan of whatever makes me laugh—crow’s feet for days over here—so I’d love to see anything told in a smart, funny voice. Bonus points for insightful social politics, underrepresented characters, and Pacific Northwest-like settings.

I have been acquiring for Tor Books since early 2012. My first acquired author was Victoria Schwab, writing adult novels under the (New York Times bestselling) pen-name V. E. Schwab. I have also worked with authors such as Marie Brennan, Charlie Jane Anders, Blake Charlton, Ian McDonald, Madeline Ashby, and winner of the Andre Norton Award, Fran Wilde.

I acquire historical fiction and fantasy for Tor Teen. I am particularly interested in exploring under-represented moments in history, and I find that the best authors can educate without being pedantic, à la Ruta Sepetys’s Between Shades of Gray. I also love a unique twist on a classic fairy tale or a clever retelling of a myth. Gorgeous prose and unconventional protagonists, particularly ones with disabilities, are a plus for me.
